Results of the study conducted in South Africa showed that antibiotic prophylaxis was not more effective than placebo in reducing the infection after a "Caesarean section".

About 500 patients received two grams of antibiotics intravenously or placebo, after stopping the umbilical cord. The use of antibiotics is not significantly decrease the incidence of post-operative fever, wound infection, endometritis, urinary tract infection or pneumonia.

In addition to this finding, it is determined one more accuracy: body mass was only identified risk factor that has been associated with an increased incidence of infections.

Doctors advise that antibiotic prophylaxis "caesarean" off all the patients, except those with a high body mass.
